A Pakistani militant, his accomplice and two civilians, Altaf Ahmed Bhatt and Mudassir Gul, were killed in an encounter in the Hyderpora area of Srinagar on Monday. Altaf Ahmed Bhatt was the owner of the shopping complex where the encounter took place, while Mudassir Gul was one of the tenants of the building. The families of both Altaf Ahmed Bhatt and Mudassir Gul have claimed their innocence and demanded their bodies.
Significantly, according to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Mudassir Gul was an active supporter of the militants and was running a call center on the Altaf-owned campus. On the other hand, Kashmir Range Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar had on Tuesday said that Altaf Bhatt was killed in a crossfire with militants. Vijay Kumar said Bhatt would be counted in the terrorist camp. Following the family’s acquittal, LG has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Hyderpora encounter.
